Cellar News & Notes

Another fantastic wet winter has the Santa Ynez Valley teaming with plant life; mountains are green, with the yellows and purples and oranges of the wildflowers, beginning to add to the grandeur. The grapevines are beginning to break bud in some of the earlier varieties, like Pinot Noir at Fiddlestix.

In the cellar we are working our way through the bottling of the 2022 wines, which are extremely promising, especially considering some of the challenges of the year. As they are bottled, we will be slowly releasing them to the Wine Club and the general public. Last month it was the 2022 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, now we are moving to the 2022 single vineyard Sauvignon Blancs. You might recall from last year; the 2022 Happy Canyon Sauvignon Blanc was fabulous. Alas it sold out long ago, but it portended great things for the Single Vineyard wines, which were aged an additional 9 months on the lees in the finest mostly neutral French oak cooperage.

New Release – 2022 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blancs

You all know Happy Canyon by now. The combination of fascinating soils (alluvial, clay loam, serpentine, river cobbles from old river beds, etc.) and a unique climate (warm days, cold nights) combine to make this one of the most ideal places in the world to grow Sauvignon Blanc. Our grape sources are truly at the pinnacle of Sauvignon Blanc quality, combining great sites with impeccable farming, and these are among the highest rated Sauvignon Blancs produced anywhere in the world.

2022 was framed by a dry winter, a March deluge of rain, and a cool windy spring that led to shatter and low yields. The vintage was then largely cool until August when sustained warmth led to a rapid ripening of the some of the lowest yielding Sauvignon Blanc in many years (akin to 2015 and 2017). Unlike those years, however, the cool vintage meant that acidities were still excellent when August warmed up, and the harvested pH’s were surprisingly excellent. With careful timing at harvest, we were able to quickly and efficiently bring in very high-quality fruit.

**Note. The Grassini and Vogelzang are wine club selections, and therefore, we can only let a small amount out today, as we must reserve the lion’s share for the club. Given their tiny production, we suggest acting fast, or better yet, joining the wine club to ensure access.

The Wines

2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Grassini Family Vineyard ** Wine Club Wine, Fall 2024

Juve Buenrostro has been managing the excellent crew here, led by Manuel (Meno) Cardoza, which has been farming our sections for more than 10 years. At Juve’s direction, Meno and the team perform precise pruning and canopy management strategies just for us, eschewing the extra canes and other high production techniques often characteristic of other Sauvignon Blanc vineyards. We love these guys and gals!

In 2022, we had to be nimble due to the low yields and warming weather. The grapes were harvested quickly from August 19-24, with field sorting by the owners themselves. Yields were very low for Grassini, just about 3.25 tons per acre in our sections. As a result, we made only 225 cases of this wine.

The 2022 Grassini wine is comprised of selected lots, which were aged on the lees for 16 months in 100% French oak barrels (228L) and Cigars (300L), 10% of which were new. The wine shows its usual kaleidoscopic green fruited (kiwi, honeydew) and tropical (passion fruit, fresh coconut) and flavors, with nice lift from vibrant, yet round and lip-smacking acidity.

The 2022 Grassini has not been reviewed but the 2021 Grassini was rated 94 points by both Vinous and Jeb Dunnuck.

Extremely limited – Only 225 cases produced, most going to the wine club this Fall.

2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Vogelzang Vineyard ** Wine Club Wine, Winter 2025

Vogelzang continues its run of spectacular vintages. We have leased several acres here since 2009, and these wines have been some of our most highly sought after wines. Farming is by the acre, with specialized pruning, canopy management and irrigation strategies. As with Grassini, Juve Buenrostro runs the team at Vogelzang, and they provide truly excellent farming. Vines are now almost 25 years old, reducing yields and concentrating flavors.

In 2022, yields were extremely low, managing at most 2 tons per acre due to poor set and drought. Fortunately, we have more than 2.5 acres here and were able to just barely produce 250 cases. Choosing which lots went into the single vineyard wine was almost impossible as all the barrels were truly excellent.

Ultimately, we selected 100% French oak barrels of varying sizes (228L barriques, 300L “cigars”  and 320 L “Muid’ocs”). In total the new wood represented 28% of the blend.  The wine was aged for a total of 16 months on its lees before bottling.

The resulting wine shows classic Vogelzang character of powerful stone fruit, mango and pineapple aromas, with some floral and herb notes, followed by dramatic fruit flavors of great concentration and texture.

The 2022 Vogelzang has not yet been scored, but is a worthy successor to the 2021 version to which Jeb Dunnuck gave 96 points (among his highest scores for Sauvignon Blanc globally for the year).

Extremely Limited. Only 250 cases produced, with most going to the Wine Club in February 2025.

2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Grimm’s Bluff Vineyard

We do not like to say too much about Grimm’s Bluff. It is a small vineyard, producing very little fruit. But, it is such a remarkable site and produces such exquisite Sauvignon Blanc that we feel fortunate, even downright lucky to obtain fruit here. We love the farming team too, led by Rick Grimm and Garrett Gamache. Here it is all about quality. We have three separate blocks here (head trained clone 1, vertical shoot position (“VSP”) clone 1 and VSP musque clone). The small amounts of grapes we receive are specially handled, mostly in French oak “cigars” initially developed by Didier Dagueneau, a portion of which is new (light long toast). Here the wood frames the wine, stretching it and lengthening it so that the finish lasts minutes.

In 2022, yields were again, miniscule, only 1.4 tons per acre. The selection for this wine was 64% from the head trained section, and 36% VSP, and we aged wine for 16 months on its lees in 100% French oak, 37% of which was once used and 63% neutral. As is typical, this wine is tightly coiled, but massively concentrated and supremely long, lifted in the finish by powerful minerals from the clay and river rock soils, with spectacular round acidity. The wine gives the taster both excitement and contemplation, which we truly love in a wine.

No reviews yet, but the 2021 was rated 96 Points by Jeb Dunnuck.

This wine is extremely limited, only 140 cases were produced.

El Niño has delivered the first of the February rains, with more on the way. As usual we are hoping that it comes down at a measured pace, as the ground is already saturated and Lake Cachuma already full. Fingers crossed.

Vineyard Notes: Certainly, the vines enjoyed the wet weather and the cold nights this month and are enjoying a solid dormancy so far. We will start our (late) pruning during the descending moon later this month. The late pruning helps delay budbreak until after the high frost risk has subsided. Just as important, it is the method of pruning that matters. We prune shorter, without the extra canes prevalent elsewhere, to ensure balanced vines with reasonable yields that the vines can properly ripen into highly concentrated grapes. A recent, very extensive barrel tasting with Ruben Solorzano, the grape whisperer, drove home the point (for the umpteenth time) that the best wines come from lower yielding vines, pure and simple. We will continue to work with our vineyard partners to practice the highest quality viticulture, which we know will result in the best grapes possible in 2024.

Winery & Tasting Room Notes: After an epic pack out, the Winter Wine Club has shipped! Thanks go out to our intrepid team members; Bryan, Kristin, Stephen, Kevin, Sarah and of course Wine Club Manager Tiffany, who helped us set all-time records in many categories. Additionally, we must recognize David and Tasting Room Manager Nick who handled the busy Tasting Room and added even more members. The weekends and sunny but cool midweek days have indeed been hopping.

New Releases & 2022 Vintage Notes: We are pleased to announce the release of the first Pinot Noir and first Chardonnay of the challenging, though ultimately excellent 2022 Vintage. 2022 started out as a classic cool year, with very low yields from shatter. However, a massive heat dome over Santa Barbara County around Labor Day threw the proverbial monkey wrench into the plans, and it took extensive evaluation of pick dates and significant sorting to ensure high quality undamaged fruit made it to the winery. As you know, this is our strong suit here at Dragonette Cellars, where John, Brandon and Steve are constantly in the vineyards evaluating the vine and fruit condition, dropping underripe or damaged fruit and sorting like crazy at harvest. We were able to pick carefully around the heat, and the resulting fruit was in excellent condition with surprisingly wonderful acidity from the cool year, and a nice kick of ripeness from the late season warmth.

The Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir and the Duvarita Chardonnay showcase the exuberant fruit of the late season warmth, and also the fresh acidity and fabulous balance of the otherwise cool 2022 vintage. As great as 2021 was, 2022 is right up there quality wise, which we think is a testament to our hard work and experience with our fabulous grape sources. Enjoy!

The Wines

2022 Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills

This wine was crafted from selected barrels from all of our Pinot Noir vineyards in order to make a wine of great flavor, complexity and harmony. We chose barrels that demonstrate approachability, an engaging personality, freshness and charm. The wine is comprised of grapes from Fiddlestix (32%) Radian (22%), Sanford & Benedict (12%), Bentrock (10%), Rancho La Vina (6%), La Rinconada (6%), Spear (6%) and Duvarita (6%), each block of which was carefully followed all season, harvested with field sorting and processed within hours.

The various barrels of wine were aged 15 months on their lees in neutral French oak barriques, then blended and bottled without filtration. The 2022 vintage plays up the exuberant red and black fruit with a great mid-palate concentration, juiciness and complexity, and long rich finish. We think it would be great with roast chicken, hearty root vegetables, and of course charcoal grilled steaks. Approachable, but the wine will age over the medium term on its balance and concentration.

2022 Chardonnay, Duvarita Vineyard

Painfully small yields of Chardonnay in 2022 meant that we decided to focus on single vineyard wines. Duvarita is biodynamically farmed, using regenerative practices, and yields a tiny crop of uniquely expressive fruit.

The 2022 Duvarita Chardonnay was picked after the heat had subsided, and the vines had come back into balance. Heat and other damage required significant sorting at harvest time. We had 4 clones available to us (548, 76, Mt. Eden, and Calera) and yet total production was less than 100 cases. What little fruit there was showed great intensity of flavor, and we fermented and aged the wines in thick-staved, neutral 350L Damy barrels (one of which was once used). The wine was aged on its lees (no stirring) for 15 months before bottling.

Despite its challenges, the wine has been utterly delicious, right out of the gate, showing great balance, seamless texture and an engaging personality. Open knit aromatics and flavors of stone fruits, melons and citrus are lifted by flinty minerals and lip-smacking acidity. Extremely limited.  Only 95 cases made.

Rhone Release

New Rhone Releases
2020 MJM
2021 Syrah, John Sebastiano Vineyard
2021 Seven
2021 Grenache, John Sebastiano Vineyard

These wines are extremely limited
There’s only so much to spare of these wines as most of their case production is allocated to the current or upcoming Wine Club, so be sure to act fast.

We hope you all had a fantastic start to 2024! It has been cold here in the Santa Ynez Valley. Vineyards are all certainly dormant after significant cold snaps in the last couple weeks. Rain amounts have been more or less “normal” for the season, but we are hoping that the little boy (El Nino) delivers us a good amount of rain to start the year off right. Some of the biggest rain years here have been El Nino years, but one never knows. Fingers crossed as usual. We will start pruning fairly soon and into February, hoping a good slumber will have the vines refreshed and ready for a terrific year.  Soothsayers have suggested a sunny warm growing season after several cool ones. We will see!

Here in the cellar, we are preparing for the release of our Winter Wine Club.  The Wine Club Members have received their customization emails, and we are preparing for another couple of days of “all hands on deck” club shipment packing.

In connection with the wine club shipment, we can now release to the general public a small amount of one of the key Wine Club wines, our flagship Syrah, the 2020 MJM. A blend of our favorite, most dramatic Syrahs, blended with small amounts of Grenache and Viognier, this wine enjoys an extra year in barrel to allow full evolution of these intense and structured lots. This wine has already received 97+ points from Jeb Dunnuck, and we are certain that you will want some bottles to follow as it ages gracefully over the coming 15-20 years.  A recent tasting of the 2011 and 2014 MJM’s demonstrated wonderful development, but a long life ahead.

In addition, we are releasing to the general public, the 2021 Syrah, John Sebastiano Vineyard, the 2021 Seven Syrah, and the 2021 Grenache. The 2021 John Sebastiano Syrah was a Fall 2023 Wine Club Wine, sports a 96+ rating from Jeb Dunnuck and is almost sold out. The 2021 Seven, far from being the baby brother of the MJM is actually stylistically distinct creature, with more savory, aromatic and expressive character. Jeb Dunnuck once (2017 vintage) called this wine more of a Cote Rotie-style compared to the more Hermitage-like John Sebastiano Syrah. Dunnuck gave the 2021 Seven 93+ points, calling it “terrific.” Galloni gave it 94 points. Lastly, the 2021 Grenache, John Sebastiano Vineyard is a decidedly cool climate wine. We like to call it the Pinot maker’s Grenache. Bright red fruits and spices are delivered in a lithe, texturally pure package. The wine is a delight, but we make only a tiny amount.

** NOTE TO WINE CLUB MEMBERS: The MJM is in the Winter Club Shipment (January 2024) and the Seven will be in the Spring Club (April 2024).

The Wines

2020 MJM (Syrah) (Santa Ynez Valley)

MJM is our flagship, Syrah-based blend, named in honor of our wives Michelle, Jen and Mitchi. We farm Syrah from several precise blocks in both Ballard Canyon and Sta. Rita Hills, and we select only the finest, most dramatic, barrels for this blend, to which we add small amounts of Grenache. The resulting wine is given additional aging until we feel it is ready for bottling. Depending upon vintage, élevage lasts anywhere from 24 to 34 months.

This wine is a product of the miracle 2020 vintage. A generally cool year was upended by a series of punishing heatwaves in August-October and devastating fires elsewhere in the State. We fortunately avoided smoke effects here, and thus we call it a miracle vintage. Although we saw some dehydration and yield reduction, we also found underlying acidities were still excellent from the cool (prior to August) year. The freshness played well with the exuberant fruit of 2020.

The 2020 MJM was crafted from wines from Stolpman (60%), Kimsey (25%) & Larner (10%). John Sebastiano was affected by a localized fire in July, and we were not able to use the fruit.  Clones included 3, 470, 383, Estrella, 174, Alban and a massal selection from Kimsey. This dramatically intense wine was aged for a total of 27 months in the finest French oak cooperage (Sylvain, Ermitage & Seguin Moreau) of which 60% was new.

The 2020 MJM is deeply concentrated, well structured, and bold, with exuberant black, purple and blue fruits, framed by super high-quality oak, baking spices and iron, lifted by stony minerals. The wine all Ballard Canyon in 2020, and thus shows the broad shoulders, the power and tannic spine of that AVA. It will slowly unfold over the next 10 years and keep another 15 after that. Though powerful, it is already drinkable as the fleshy fruit notes coat the mouth and buffer the strong tannins.

The 2020 MJM was 97+ Points Jeb Dunnuck, who called it “stunning,” “full-bodied” and “flawlessly balanced.” Antonio Galloni of Vinous rated it 95 Points.

Extremely Limited. Only 475 cases produced. Most of that will go to the Wine Club in the Winter Shipment (early February 2024).

2021 Syrah, John Sebastiano Vineyard (Sta Rita Hills)

This dramatic hillside site lies on the eastern border of the Sta. Rita Hills and is one of the coolest sites planted to Rhone varietals in all of California. Each block contains a different clone and rootstock combination (470 on 5BB, Estrella and 383 are own rooted). The steep hillside soils are clay-loam over limestone. The cool wind and fog at this site provide for an extremely long season. These grapes produce a dark, intensely aromatic wine, with cool black and blue berry fruits, great freshness, mineral lift and solid structure for aging.

In 2021, the wine combines three separate blocks and clones (470, 383, & Estrella), each of which was picked separately in multiple passes as ripeness developed. The grapes were fermented separately in 1.5-ton, open top fermenters (100% destemmed) by native yeasts. At dryness, we combined free run and gently pressed lots and transferred them to French oak barrels (228L barriques and a few 400L barrels), 58 percent new, with various coopers (Sylvain, Ermitage, Seguin Moreau) and toast levels (M, ML, M+). The wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was ultimately aged on its lees for 9 months before selection and blending, then the blended wine returned to barrel for an additional 8 months before bottling. The wine is fantastic in this cooler, more elegant year. Drinkable now, it will improve for 7-15 years or longer.

The Wine was rated 96+ Points by Jeb Dunnuck, who said, “The [wine] would be the equivalent of a great Cornas from California given its wild, feral, almost bloody style. Ripe red and black fruits, salted meat, bouquet garni, iron, and subtle marine-like notes all define the aromatics, and this fabulous Syrah is medium to full-bodied, with ripe, integrated, yet building tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish.”

Extremely Limited. 380 cases were produced, only a few (less than 20) remain, post Fall Wine Club.

2021 Seven (Syrah) (Santa Ynez Valley)

The 2021 Seven is comprised of 95% Syrah, 3% Grenache and 2% Viognier sourced from top-flight vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills and Ballard Canyon: 50% Stolpman (Ballard Canyon / Sustainable), 30% Spear (Sta. Rita Hills/Cert. Organic), 15% Kimsey (Ballard Canyon / Cert. Organic), 5% John Sebastiano (Sta. Rita Hills/Organic). The wine was aged in neutral French oak (228L barriques, 400L, and 500L puncheons) for 9 months before being blended and then returned to barrel for an additional 8 months aging before bottling.

We are thrilled with the performance of this wine, as it is already beginning to show explosive, complex aromatics (red, blue and black fruits, spices and meats), lovely texture with vibrant, layered red, blue and purple fruits, but also plenty of acidity and tannic structure to provide a long finish for such a young wine. We expect this wine to continue to develop for 5-10 years and to last for well over a decade after that.

This wine was rated 94 points by Antonio Galloni at Vinous and 93+ points Jeb Dunnuck. Limited. Only 575 cases produced.

2021 Grenache, John Sebastiano Vineyard (Sta Rita Hills)

Grenache at John Sebastiano grows on a steep, south-east facing hillside of almost pure sand on the eastern edge of the block and slightly heavier sandy clay loam toward the west and at the bottom of the block. The block is typically picked very late but at relatively low sugar levels for Grenache. These grapes produce a cool, energetic, mineral-laden wine with juicy, high toned, aromatic red fruits, fresh herbs, and good structure for aging.

In the cool 2021 vintage, the Grenache was harvested in late October at relatively low sugars. We did not see sufficient stem ripeness to permit whole cluster fermentation and decided to destem 100% of the Grenache (typically we use up to 25% whole clusters). The grapes were fermented in 1.5-ton, open top fermenters by native yeasts. At dryness, we drained the free run juice and gently pressed the remaining berries, and then and transferred the wine to large French oak barrels (600 L, Demi-Muid and 500L puncheons) for aging. The wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was ultimately aged on its lees for 15 months before blending and bottling. The wine is fantastic in this cooler, more elegant year, with bright strawberry and raspberry fruits, fresh herbs and spices, fabulous texture and a very long finish from great structure. Enjoyable now, the wine will improve for 5-7 years.

Extremely Limited. Only 110 cases produced.

We hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving and are enjoying the start to the Holiday season. We are happy to report that we just wrapped up a very successful (if incredibly long) 2023 growing season. Quality appears exceptionally high (more on that later).

With harvest over, we are excited to announce the release of our last two Pinot Noirs from the excellent 2021 vintage; long time Club favorites, the single vineyard Fiddlestix Pinot Noir and the topline Black Label Pinot Noir. These wines were both tremendously concentrated and exciting in 2021, and we expect great things from them as they age. Both wines will be in upcoming wine club shipments, but there is enough to offer a small amount to the rest of the world now.

Additionally, we do have a small amount of the 2021 Pinot Noirs from Bentrock, Sanford & Benedict and Radian. Mix and match and you can see and experience the various terroirs of the Sta. Rita Hills. Fascinating wines, each of them.

** NOTE TO WINE CLUB MEMBERS: The Fiddlestix Pinot Noir will be in the Winter Club Shipment (coming January 2024) and the Black Label will be in the Spring Club (April 2024). Additional bottles can be purchased/shipped now or combined with upcoming shipments (please note your preference on checkout in the Billing tab (Add a note about this order)).

The Wines

2021 Pinot Noir Black Label, Sta. Rita Hills

Here she is, our most dramatic Pinot Noir, the Black Label. The Black Label program was forged from a single barrel in 2010 that simply insisted that we create a cuvee of our most expressive Pinot Noirs from our favorite vineyards. Since then, this wine has gone on to become a Club favorite and to garner consistently high critical praise and even a 100 point score (from Jeb Dunnuck on 2019 version). We think the 2021, being a product of a long cool vintage is right up there with the 2019.

The 2021 Black Label is particularly interesting in that the blend consists of barrels from 6 of our Pinot Noir vineyards (7 different clones). The final blend is comprised of: Fiddlestix (40%), Radian (20%), Bentrock (20%), Sanford & Benedict (7%), Rancho La Vina (7%) and La Rinconada (6%). Additionally, the outstanding 2021 vintage permitted us to utilize more whole clusters in the various lots. The 2021 Black Label is 13% whole cluster as well.  Each of these characteristics increases complexity.

The 2021 Black Label was aged on its lees for 19 months in French oak barrels (40% new) and bottled unfiltered. We think it is remarkable expressive for such a dramatically scaled, well structured wine, and its silky texture and impeccable balance will yield a tremendous aging curve. Drink 2024-2036+.

The 2021 wine has not yet been rated, but the 2020 was 96+ points and the 2019 was 100 points Jeb Dunnuck.

Extremely Limited. Only 360 cases were made. This is a Spring Wine Club selection (April 2024), and therefore only a few cases remain for non-members.

2021 Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills

Our longest tenured single vineyard wine, the single vineyard Fiddlestix was first made in 2008 (though we bought grapes back in 2006 here as well). This venerable vineyard was planted by pioneering winemaker Kathy Joseph in 1998. Since then, it has gone on to become a stalwart member of the Sta Rita Hills appellation. Across the road from Sanford & Benedict and La Rinconada and just below Sea Smoke and Rita’s Crown, Fiddlestix forms an integral part of what we like to call the tenderloin of the SRH. Others refer to this as the “goldilocks zone”, just close enough to the ocean to be cooled by wind and fog, but far enough away to obtain optimal ripeness. Recently Kathy sold the vineyard to a fantastic ownership group, and we have been able to retain (and in some cases expand) our holdings in various blocks. The future looks bright here.

A product of a cool, wonderful vintage the 2021 Fiddlestix grapes were picked across a long 9 day period under ideal circumstances. The grapes were then fermented with 23% whole clusters and the wine aged on its lees for 19 months in French oak barrels (27% new). Bottling was unfiltered.

We are thrilled with this wine, as think it has some of the best balance of fruit, acid and tannins of any Fiddlestix we have ever made. The wine has complexity from the whole clusters and the kiss of new oak, but remains medium bodied and texturally very smooth. This will drink well young but offer a substantial upside if aged.  Drink 2024-2034.

The 2021 wine has not yet been rated, but the 2020 was 96 points Antonio Galloni and James Suckling.

Very Limited. Only 500 cases were made. This is a Winter Wine Club selection (January  2024). Only a few cases remain for non-members.

Chardonnay Time!

We are pleased to announce the release 2021 Chardonnay, Rita’s Crown and 2021 Chardonnay, Black Label.

As we have mentioned before, 2021 was an excellent vintage, and the wines truly superlative.  The long cool season allowed very slow, measured ripening and retention of critical acidity. The wines turned out extraordinarily complex, with dramatic expressive aromas and flavors, but a very composed, almost regal structure. More a Daniel Craig version of James Bond, really, with thoughtfulness, depth, athleticism, and undeniable class.  These are being released a little later this year than last, as it did take a while for the flavors to come together. We expect that the 2021’s will be especially long-lived wines, very easily seeing their 10th or 15th birthdays in style.

The wines have not yet been reviewed, but we expect similar critical acclaim as the 2020 wines enjoyed last year (95-99 points from various critics).  These wines are made in tiny quantities and will not last long.

** NB: For Wine Club Members: The 2021 Chardonnay Rita’s Crown will be a wine club wine (Spring 2024 Shipment). Only a small amount will be available for purchase now. Of course, joining the Wine Club guarantees access to this special wine.

As our fans know (and the rest of the world is finding out) Sta. Rita Hills is truly one of the top places anywhere to grow Chardonnay grapes. The ocean influence moderates the abundant sunshine, allowing perfect ripeness at ideal acidity levels. Further, the marine-based soils and sea air provide mineral and saline aromas and flavors. Wines from here tend to have tremendous exuberance, but also impeccable balance, complexity and longevity. That said, it is the top growers that really produce knockout grapes. And, we have three of the absolute best sites represented here in these wines: Rita’s Crown, Bentrock & Radian.  It is a joy to work with these great growers and inspiring sites.

The Wines

2021 Chardonnay, Rita’s Crown Vineyard (Sta. Rita Hills)
**WINE CLUB Wine – Spring 2024
Rita’s Crown sits majestically above the famous Mt. Carmel monastery at some of the highest elevations in the Sta. Rita Hills (up to 850 feet). Our blocks are located on very steep, south and southwest facing hillsides of clay and silty clay loam with abundant diatomaceous earth. The mighty pacific sends daily fog and intense afternoon winds to this high elevation site, which is perched over the Santa Ynez River as it meanders toward its terminus at Surf Beach. The remoteness and wildness of the site is enhanced by the abandoned wreck of the former monastery, which gives off a feeling of some ancient place like Greece or Italy that is similarly dry, parched and hardscrabble. The wines are as intense as the legends that one conjures in his mind, the skins thick from all the wind, produce strong phenolics, and the dustry dry soil promotes intensity.

The Chardonnay in this block typically produces relatively low yields from a small canopy. In 2021 yields were a mere 3.4 tpa (this is the equivalent yield from one famous grower in Batard Montrachet). These lower yields and a long cool season result in ripeness at incredibly strong acid levels (in 2021 final, post ML pH was 3.34, with TA of 6.3).

The 2021 wine fermented by native yeasts in top quality French oak barrels, 43% new. The resulting wine went through native malolactic fermentation in barrel and was aged for 18 months on its lees, without stirring, before selection, blending and bottling.

Not yet rated, the 2020 received 96 points from Vinous Media (Antonio Galloni) and 95 points from Jeb Dunnuck. Extremely Limited: Only 330 Cases Produced.

2021 Chardonnay, Black Label (Sta. Rita Hills)

This wine is a reserve-level blend of our favorite barrels from the vintage. The 2021 Black Label is crafted from three of the most extreme, wind-battered, sites in Sta Rita Hills (if not anywhere): rocky, windswept Bentrock (50%), steep, diatomaceous Rita’s Crown (33%) and the salty, marine and gale-force-wind-influenced Radian (17%). These difficult sites produce small clusters of thick skinned, tiny berry Chardonnay that has massive concentration, but also very high acids and a resounding mineral streak. The 2021 wine was fermented and aged on its lees in French oak barriques (67% new) with malolactic fermentation occurring spontaneously in barrel, and a finished pH of 3.29, with a TA of 6.5 g/L.  These barrels have been a joy to taste since they completed ML (native). The resulting wine is aged for 18 months on its lees without stirring, before selection, blending and bottling.

This dramatic wine displays deep, concentrated aromas and flavors of fruit, minerals, spices and flowers, which are rich and incredibly present on the tongue in a medium to full bodied frame. The wine’s spectacular structure then takes over, with ripe, citrus and mineral acidity and the corseting effect of beautifully integrated, lightly toasted new oak.  The wine has a terrific, complex finish that lasts for minutes and portends a fantastic future.

Not yet Rated, the 2020 version was 99 points Jeb Dunnuck, 96 points Galloni.

Extremely Limited – Only 150 cases produced.

Cellar News & Notes

After the coolest spring anyone can remember, we are ready for some summer sun around here. Don’t get us wrong, we loved the very wet winter, which provided a good amount of energy for the grapevines and excellent yield potential. However, the cool and cloudy spring so far has not helped with bloom and set. Typically, the vines like temperatures between 80-90 degrees for optimal set.  We have rarely passed those numbers so far this year, even out in Happy Canyon.  We will continue to hope for some warmth to help with set and later on with ripening.

In the cellar we have completed bottling of the 2021 wines (except for the MJM). These wines are extremely promising.  2021 was an almost ideal growing season, mostly on the cool side, allowing measured ripening, excellent physiological maturity and ideal acidity levels. We think you will love these wines, and we will be releasing them as they enter into their drinking windows.  In honor of summer, we thought we would start with Sauvignon Blanc, one of the very best wines to pair with warmer days and lighter summer foods.

Finally, we have spent several weeks evaluating the wines in our case goods library.  We were happy to see these wines (whites and reds) aging wonderfully, with mature flavors, fascinating aromatic complexity, and in many cases many years of life ahead.  We are planning a Library offering of some of these wines in the upcoming weeks. Available quantities will be tiny.  Stay tuned!

New Release – 2021 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blancs and the brand new 2022 Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Sauvignon Blanc

We are pleased to announce the release of the 2021 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blancs from the Grassini Family, Grimm’s Bluff, and Vogelzang vineyards, along with the 2022 version of our appellation blend, the Sauvignon Blanc, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara.

As you all know by now, we have been extolling the virtues of Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara since its inception as an appellation (2009).  The combination of fascinating soils (alluvial, clay loam, serpentine, river cobbles from old river beds, etc.) and a unique climate (warm days, cold nights) combine to make this one of the most ideal places in the world to grow Sauvignon Blanc.  With 15 years of production under our belt, and a host of the best, most meticulously farmed sites around, we are again able to produce some of the top Sauvignon Blancs in California.

**Note. The Grassini and Vogelzang are wine club selections, and therefore, we can only let a small amount out today, as we must reserve the lion’s share for the club. Given their tiny production, we suggest acting fast, or better yet, joining the wine club to ensure access.

The Wines

2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara

This wine is blended from all four of our vineyards. We choose barrels (or tanks) that have a more energetic, taut, and lively character, along with the depth and concentration that these fabulous vineyards can provide when farmed properly. The wine ages for a total of 8 months on the lees, before it is blended, cold stabilized with a light fining (plant and soil-based fining agents) and gently cross-flow filtered before bottling. This wine has routinely been highly rated by critics and coveted by top restaurants. The wine pairs with a tremendous variety of foods with weight and interest lifted by great structure and acidity.

2022 started out as a cool vintage, until the weather turned hot in August. The late season heat rushed the low yielding grapes to maturity, and we picked almost all of the grapes in a 8 day time span. Although sugars were a tiny bit elevated (we picked in the nick of time), the grapes still had fantastic acidity from the cool year prior to August. The final blend is 45% Vogelzang, 33% Grassini, 14% Grimm’s Bluff and 8% Two Wolves. The wine was aged in 90% neutral oak barrels and 10% stainless steel for 8 months on the lees before bottling. The wine is delicious out of the gate showing mixed tropical fruits, crisp citrus-laced acidity, minerals and a touch of fresh herbs.

The 2022 wine has not yet been rated, but the 2021 was widely loved by critics (93 Wine Advocate, 92 points, Vinous).

This wine is limited, as the 2021 has been out of stock for a while, and demand is high.  It will be a great wine for summer (and the summer after that if you can keep some). Enjoy!

2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Grassini Family Vineyard
** Wine Club Wine, Fall 2023

2021 was a relatively long, even, and generally cool year. Winter was dry and cold, but rainfall was very low until an atmospheric river arrived in March and dumped 5 inches of rain in two days. This late season rain helped push budbreak back a bit and cleansed the soils. The Spring was generally cool and windy, extending flowering somewhat, but neither frost nor shatter were a problem. June was cool and foggy, while July turned warmer, but still generally under 90 degrees in Happy Canyon. August was also relatively cool, with even the warmest days cooling off at night. A mostly cool early September (excluding the usual Labor Day heatwave) allowed gentle slow ripening of Sauvignon Blanc, which were picked over a ten-day period in early September. The long season gave grapes with great ripeness at fabulous acidity. Grapes were picked in our three blocks from September 3, 6, 7 & 9.  Yields were solid and acidities were still excellent due to the cool year.

The 2021 Grassini selection was comprised of wines that were aged in 100% French oak barrels (228L) and Cigars (300L), 20% of which were new. The wine was aged on its lees for a total of 16 months before bottling. The wine shows its usual kaleidoscopic green fruited (kiwi, honeydew) and tropical (passion fruit, fresh coconut) and flavors, with nice lift from vibrant, yet round and lip-smacking acidity.

The 2021 Grassini has not been reviewed but the Wine Advocate gave the 2020 Grassini 96 points, and both Vinous and Jeb Dunnuck gave it 94 points.

Extremely limited – Only 250 cases produced, most going to the wine club this Fall.

2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Vogelzang Vineyard
**Wine Club Wine, Winter 2024

Vogelzang is a tremendous site. We have leased several acres here since 2009, and these wines have been some of our most decorated and long-lived wines – as much as the reds!  Vines are now over 20 years old, reducing yields and concentrating flavors. This has always been a top performer in our lineup, and the wine has historically aged remarkably (the 2009 is still going strong, and the 2015 and 2017 still have many years ahead of them).

In 2021 the vessels selected for this wine were 90% French oak barrels of varying sizes (228L barriques, 276L “cigars”, and 300L and 320 L “Muid’ocs”) and 10% stainless steel.  In total the new wood represented 35% of the blend.  The wine was aged for a total of 17 months on its lees before bottling.

The resulting wine shows classic Vogelzang character of powerful stone fruit, mango and pineapple aromas, with some floral and herb notes, followed by dramatic fruit flavors of great concentration and texture leading to a whiplash of citrus dominated acidity and effusive minerality, which gives a tremendous finish.

The 2021 is a worthy successor to the 94-point 2020 version (Jeb Dunnuck & Wine Advocate).  Jeb concluded his review of the 2020 single vineyard wines, saying they were “among the finest expressions of Sauvignon coming out of the Central Coast today.”

Extremely Limited. Only 300 cases produced, with most going to the Wine Club in February 2024.

2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Grimm’s Bluff Vineyard

From its inception, Grimm’s Bluff has been painstakingly and biodynamically farmed for top quality grapes, yields be damned. The vineyard produces extremely small vines and tiny clusters, which give highly concentrated fruit. We selected three separate blocks (head trained clone 1, vertical shoot position (“VSP”)  clone 1 and VSP musque clone) for this wine, which is aged in French oak Cigars, a portion of which is new (light long toast). Here the wood frames the wine, stretching it and lengthening it so that the finish lasts minutes.

In 2021, we aged the wine for 16 months on its lees in 100% French oak of various shapes and sizes (20% new). The resulting wine was all Clone 1, 60% head trained section, 40% VSP. As is typical, this wine is tightly coiled, with powerful minerals from the clay and river rock soils, and deeply concentrated from extremely low (1.4 tpa) yields. Melons and stone fruits are held aloft by citrus, minerals, excellent acidity and the structure from the new oak barrels.

Again, it is too soon for scores on this wine, but the 2020 was 95 points, Wine Advocate.

This wine is extremely limited, only 130 cases were produced.

Greetings from the Santa Ynez Valley:

Welcome sunshine! After the cold wet winter, we are finally getting some warmer, sunnier and drier days. It has been great for us, for visitors, and for the vines as well, which are at least two to three weeks behind the “normal” schedule.  The sunshine is starting to drive shoot growth across the valley. Of course, it has also stimulated the weeds, which are well supplied with water from the historic rain year. The vineyard teams have been busily running ingenious mechanical devices through the rows and under the vines to manage the weeds. It is a lot of work, but it does allow these vineyards to completely cease use of herbicides. Hooray for that.

Up above ground, plucky little clusters, tight and bright green are slowly unfurling under a canopy of fresh, new, lime green leaves which sway (and sometimes shimmy) in the late afternoon winds of the Sta. Rita Hills. Yes, it is Spring, also known as wind season around here. Warmer days inland bring in high powered ocean air currents, keeping things cool in the afternoons. Bloom will come soon, and we will be hopeful for a good crop set. Pinot Noir is particularly prone to shatter, so we will watch and wait and hope that Mother Nature is kind.

In the cellar, we have completed the bottling of the 2021 wines. We make enough wines that there is some logistical juggling (which wines are ready, which tanks to use, how to manage the floor space, etc.) to get everything safely in bottle over five or six different bottling runs. After a few months of resting, these wines are now ready to be sent out into the world.

We are starting with some of the Pinot Noirs. We are very pleased with these wines. We think they are balanced, deep and complex, lifted by proper acidity and structure, and they reflect their individual terroirs, whether the red-fruited elegance and old vine sap of Sanford & Benedict, the thoughtful, athletic, fruit and shoulders of Bentrock, the deeply intense, wild and savory Radian, or the gritty, determined, unshakeable Duvarita, We think you will love them.   Enjoy!

The Wines

2021 Pinot Noir, Sanford & Benedict Vineyard

Historic Sanford & Benedict is the original Pinot Noir vineyard (est. 1971) in the Santa Ynez Valley (Sta. Rita Hills was not established until 2001). We purchase fruit here from two distinct blocks of older vines (1999) and oldest vines (1972), buying by the acre so we may employ specialized pruning and organic farming practices. These stately vines stand tall on their enormous trunks, while still producing a solid crop of beautifully concentrated grapes. The resulting wines display sappy red and black cherry fruits with old-vine style and grace.

The 2021 wine represents this esteemed vineyard well. A product of a long, slow growing season, the wine has tremendous depth and complexity, but amazing elegance and balance from great acidity and fine-grained tannins.  This wine is a worthy successor to the 2020, which received 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck who called it “one of the finest Pinot Noirs from this vineyard in 2020.”

Extremely Limited. Only 350 cases produced.

2021 Pinot Noir, Radian Vineyard

Radian is a magical place. The landscape is stark, steep, scraggly and covered in poison oak and chapparal. The planted slopes are battered daily by cold, salty, high winds, and the soils are parched dry and silty, with diatomaceous earth outcroppings and thin layers of sandy and clay topsoils that cling to the ground against the onslaught of the mighty Pacific’s fury.

The vines here struggle to produce minuscule yields of tiny clusters. But those clusters are immensely flavorful, the thick skins giving firm, robust tannins, which are enveloped by the deep dark fruits, spices, and fresh & dried herbs. This is a singular site, producing a singular wine, and one we are always thrilled to make.

In 2021, the Radian grapes were harvested late, from early to mid-October. The very long year meant we had tremendous flavor development, while acidities remained excellent. The 2021 Radian was fermented on native yeasts, and the wine then aged on its lees for 17 months in French oak cooperage (27% new) before bottling without fining or filtration.

The 2021 Radian Pinot Noir is deep and complex, with a dark red fruit profile (some black cherries and red plums, with raspberry liqueur, pomegranate) with leafy rhubarb and forest floor notes, a streak of granite and minerals, and a good solid backbone of fine tannins. Texturally, the wine is graceful despite the fruit power due to citrus and mineral laced acidity. It is a worthy successor to the 2020, which was lauded as a “wonderful wine” and given 97 points by James Suckling.

Very Limited. Only 500 cases produced, most of which will go to the Wine Club in October 2023.  We have a small portion available for sale now. We suggest you get yours very soon or risk missing out.

2021 Pinot Noir, Bentrock Vineyard

Bentrock, sister vineyard to Radian, is located at the far western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills on steep slopes of sandy and shale loam soils and diatomaceous earth. This site is regularly buffeted by ocean winds and cooled by daily fog giving a long, slow growing season. We select grapes from several distinct blocks at different aspects (two north facing, one south facing) and elevations (375-525 feet above sea level) from across the vineyard. The wines from here are intensely fruited but in a leaner frame from the cool location. Wines show red fruits, gentle baking spices, herbs, and marine influenced minerals. Farming is Certified Sustainable (SIP), without herbicides.

The 2021 Bentrock Pinot Noir is composed of wines from three different blocks and clones (115, 113, & 667) from across the labyrinthian vineyard (it snakes across four separate ridges and mesas overlooking the Santa Ynez River). The almost perfect growing season allowed long hang tine and great flavor development, with the added bonus of fabulous natural acidity from the cool year. The wine was fermented with 12% whole clusters and aged on its lees for 15 months in French oak barrels (12% new). The wine shows fresh, lifted, energetic red fruits, some baking spices and savory herb notes, good depth, and a wonderful silky texture in a medium bodied frame. A versatile wine, it could pair with anything (roast poultry, grilled meats, cheese, mushrooms, etc.)

Extremely Limited. Only 190 cases produced.

2021 Pinot Noir, Duvarita Vineyard

Duvarita Vineyard, just west of the Santa Rita Hills appellation, lies on south-facing slopes of almost pure sand. The grapes here are farmed biodynamically, without tilling and with sheep for weed management (and their, ahem, “inputs”). To say that owner Brook Williams is a crusader would be an understatement. The low vigor soils, small canopy, and a low fruit zone combine to make this one of the lowest yielding and earliest ripening vineyards we farm. The small clusters here give wines that are lean and elegant, with terrific intensity, minerality and a remarkable depth of flavor even at lower alcohol levels.

2021 was another low yielding year at Duvarita. Yields were limited by uneven set and the effect of a long drought. The very small crop we did harvest though had remarkably good acidity and concentration. The wine was aged on its lees for 15 months in mostly once-used French oak barrels.

Beyond Limited. Only 75 cases produced.

2021 Pinot Noir, Collaboration (tasting room and wine club only)

Now in its third iteration, this wine was created in “Collaboration” with our Staff. The final blend of six barrels was crafted from more than a dozen barrels from several vineyards. Ultimately, the favorite blend contained wines that were 67% Bentrock Vineyard and 33% Radian Vineyard. The final blend is made from mostly (98%) destemmed fruit from 100% neutral barrels.  No egos were harmed in the production of this wine.

We think the 2021 Collaboration shows exuberance, happiness, and smiles, with waves of intriguing red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, pomegranate) and fabulous mineral laced acidity, with a kiss of salt from the nearby Pacific.

The Staff enjoys selling it at the Tasting Room ONLY. Ask to try it when you are in town, and we are sure you will want to take some home.

Extremely Limited, only 150 cases produced.

Greetings from the Santa Ynez Valley:

Happy Almost Spring! What a cold wet winter it has been, but the vines will really appreciate all the rain and a long dormancy. Once the sun starts shining, the vines should be very energetic indeed.  We look forward to another growing season, kicking off soon!

In the meantime, we are pleased to announce the release of the first Pinot Noir and first Chardonnay of the fantastic 2021 Vintage. We do not like to use the term “best ever” for a vintage, but 2021 was indeed special, and these wines are already showing great after only a couple months in bottle. You are going to love these wines, but beware, demand has continued to outstrip supply.

We are also happy to announce that Rosé is Back! Sunny days are undoubtedly ahead after the cold, wet (hooray!) winter. Fresh, crisp, and lip smacking, the 2022 Rosé promises smiles.

Vintage Notes:
2021 was a relatively long, even, and generally cool year. Winter was dry and cold, but rainfall was very low until an atmospheric river arrived in March and dumped 5 inches of rain in two days. This late season rain helped push budbreak back a bit and cleansed the soils. The Spring was generally cool and windy, extending flowering somewhat, but neither frost nor shatter were a problem. June was cool and foggy, while July turned warmer, but only into the 80’s in Sta Rita Hills. August was also relatively cool, with even the warmest days cooling off at night. A mostly cool September (excluding the usual Labor Day heatwave) and early October allowed gentle slow ripening of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which were picked before mid-October under ideal conditions. The long season gave grapes with great ripeness at fabulous acidity.

The Wines

2021 Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills

The 16th vintage of this wine, and a fabulous one it is! This wine was crafted from selected barrels from all of our Pinot Noir vineyards in order to make a wine of great flavor, complexity and harmony. We chose barrels that demonstrate approachability, an engaging personality, freshness and charm. The wine is comprised of grapes from Radian (42%), Bentrock (17%), Sanford & Benedict (14%), Fiddlestix (12%), Rancho La Vina (9%), La Rinconada (3%) and Spear (3%).  The wine was aged 15 months on its lees in neutral French oak barriques, then blended and bottled without filtration. The cool vintage gives this wine a great combination of ripeness with structure, energy and length.

2021 Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills

Our answer to the constant Chardonnay questions – no, Chardonnay does not have to be buttery, or oaky or heavy. Here in the cool Sta. Rita Hills, the Chardonnay has great yellow and tropical fruits but with fabulous acidity and intrigue from the mineral impression as well as energy, lift and cut. We are very pleased with this wine, right out of the gate, it has been balanced and seamless and delicious. 85% Rita’s Crown and 15% Duvarita, fermented and aged for 15 months on its lees, in mostly second fill French Oak barrels. Due to low yields this wine is extremely limited.  Only 140 cases made.

2022 Rosé, Santa Ynez Valley

80% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, 7%  Graciano

60% Vogelzang Vineyard, 40% Two Wolves Vineyard,

13.3% ABV

Our yearly Rosé release is always eagerly anticipated, and the 2022 certainly justifies the excitement. Made from big, beautiful, happy clusters picked in the early morning hours and rushed to the winery where they  were gently pressed, and the juice settled overnight and then fermented into wine in 65% neutral barrels (228L, 400L, 500L) and 35% stainless steel. The wine was aged for 5 months on its lees, picking up complexity and harmony and then carefully bottled.

The wine displays bright red fruits (strawberries & raspberries) along with watermelon, green apple, citrus peel and bright acidity. We think it is a perfect combination of ripeness and energy. The wine will pair beautifully with the warm spring and summer months, in the open air, with food, and without. Enjoy!

Wines are available for pick up at the Los Olivos Tasting Room or can be shipped across the US.

Greetings Everyone:

We are happy to announce the release of our newest wines: the 2020 Syrah Seven, 2020 Grenache, Peake Ranch and the 2019 MJM. ** Note: We were unable to make a John Sebastiano Syrah in 2020, but that wine will return in the 2021 Vintage.

Summer has been just about perfect here in Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley, as the world’s biggest refrigerator, the Pacific Ocean, has done its job of cooling the region as always.  The warmer parts of the Valley (Happy Canyon) have hot days in summer, but afternoon winds and nightly fog moderate conditions substantially (highs in the mid-90s, lows in the 50’s). Our cooler regions (Sta. Rita Hills) are kept mostly below 80 degrees by the omnipresent ocean influence, with lots of daytime sun (“refrigerated sunlight” as grapegrowing pioneer and local legend Richard Sanford calls it) and nighttime fog. So far, 2022 looks very strong, with solid grape set across all varieties. Canopies have been positioned and leafed and, frankly look great. We are catching up after a very cool Spring, but, thankfully, not too fast.

The wines in this release come from the miracle 2020 vintage, which we have already discussed in prior emails. A generally cool year was upended by a series of punishing heatwaves in August-October and devastating fires elsewhere in the State. We fortunately avoided smoke effects here, and thus we call it a miracle vintage. Although we saw some dehydration and yield reduction, we also found underlying acidities were still excellent, making for delicious, balanced wines of great charm.  We are sure you will love them.

The Wines

2020 Syrah, Seven (Santa Ynez Valley)

**Note to Wine Club Members – This wine will appear in your Spring 2023 Shipment (April 2023).

Seven is our Syrah-based blend, originally named for the seven exceptional cool climate vineyard sites from which it was comprised. Over the years we have refined our vineyard sources (dropping some, expanding into others), selecting precise blocks and clones to increase aromatic and flavor complexity. The 2020 Seven is comprised of 96% Syrah and 4% Grenache sourced from top-flight vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills and Ballard Canyon: 37% Stolpman (Ballard Canyon / Sustainable), 29% Kimsey (Ballard Canyon / Cert. Organic), 26% Spear (Sta. Rita Hills/Cert. Organic), 8% Larner (Ballard Canyon/Organic). The wine was aged in French oak (228L barriques, 400L, and 500L puncheons), 5% of which was new, for 9 months before being blended and then returned to barrel for an additional 8 months aging before bottling.

Not yet rated, but the 2019 was rated 94+ points Wine Advocate (Erin Brooks).

Very Limited. Only 550 cases produced.

2019 Syrah, MJM (Santa Barbara County)

**Note to Wine Club Members – This wine will appear in your Winter 2023 Shipment (January 2023).

The 2019 Vintage was generally cool, except for some late August heat that helped push the sun loving Syrah toward ripeness. September was cooler again, and the grapes marched slowly toward ripeness, with uneven clusters being removed in numerous passes. Harvest took place between late September and Mid October. The grapes had great color and intensity, but with a real sense of freshness from the excellent acidity. The 2019 MJM was crafted from wines from John Sebastiano (60%), Stolpman (30%), and Larner (10%). Clones included 470, 383, Estrella, 174, Alban 1, and 3. This dramatically intense wine was aged for a total of 28 months in the finest French oak cooperage (Sylvain, Ermitage & Seguin Moreau) of which 60% was new.

The 2019 MJM is deeply concentrated, well structured, and regal, with exuberant black, purple and blue fruits, framed by super high-quality oak, spices and a touch of herbs. It will slowly unfold over the next 10 years and keep another 10 after that, but it makes a heady statement already. We think it reminds us a little of the 2011 version which has been tasting great.

The wine has not been rated. The 2018 MJM was 95-97+ Points Jeb Dunnuck.

Extremely Limited. Only 400 cases produced, and most of that will go to the Wine Club in the Winter Shipment (early February 2022).

2020 Grenache, Peake Ranch Vineyard (Sta. Rita Hills)

Grenache at Peake Ranch grows on a south-east facing hillside of sandy and clay loam on the eastern edge of the cool Sta. Rita Hills. Syrah in Sta Rita Hills is typically picked very late but at relatively low sugar levels for Grenache. These grapes produce a cool, energetic, mineral-laden wine with juicy, high toned, aromatic red fruits, fresh herbs, and good structure for aging.

In 2020 vintage, the Grenache was harvested in early October after the third heat event, and immediately prior to a fourth one. Due to high level smoke from distant fires, we decided to destem 100% of the Grenache (typically we use up to 25% whole clusters). The grapes were fermented in 1.5-ton, open top fermenters by native yeasts. At dryness, we drained the free run juice and gently pressed the remaining berries, and then transferred the wine to a large French oak 1200L Muid, where it aged for 7 months before being racked to smaller vessels (500L puncheons and 228L barriques) for 10 more months aging before blending and bottling. The wine is a little more generous of fruit than past vintages of Grenache, but it still maintains a cool edge with bright raspberry fruits, spices, and a fabulous texture. Enjoyable now, the wine will improve for 5-7 years and hold much longer.

Extremely Limited. Only 120 cases produced.

Visiting Santa Ynez Valley

Summer is a great time to visit Santa Ynez Valley. We have long warm to sometimes hot summer days that spill into clear warm nights perfect for dining al fresco with some of the best wines made anywhere. Due to our small size, we are not typically crowded or congested. Mornings are crisp, perfects for hikes, biking, horseback riding, tennis, golf, or even rowing out on Lake Cachuma. We even have hot air ballooning. The beaches of Santa Barbara & Jalama are close and uncrowded. Afternoons are perfect for going wine tasting in town or at our friends’ gorgeous estate vineyards, and of course, there are plenty of great dining options as well.

Make a reservation here for wine tasting in bucolic Los Olivos (the Tasting Room or the Study) or amongst the barrels at the Winery in Buellton.

We will see you soon!

Cheers!

New Release – 2020 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blancs and the brand new 2021 Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Sauvignon Blanc

We are thrilled to announce the release of the 2020 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blancs from the Grassini Family, Grimm’s Bluff, and Vogelzang vineyards, along with the 2021 version of our appellation blend, the Sauvignon Blanc, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara.

We believe that Sauvignon Blanc is one of the great wine grapes of the world, and that Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara is perhaps the most ideal place in the US to grow it. Properly farmed for quality, Sauvignon Blanc from here makes astounding wines, as has been recognized by our customers and critics alike.

**Note. The Grassini and Vogelzang are wine club selections, and therefore, we can only let a small amount out today, as we must reserve the lion’s share for the club. Given their tiny production, we suggest acting fast, or better yet, joining the wine club to ensure your access.

Sauvignon Blanc Program Overview

From our inception, we noticed that properly farmed grapes from Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara gave wines of concentration but also great structure, and we believed that these grapes could be made in the style of top white Bordeaux, with its intensity and aging potential. With that intention, we set out to find the best sites and fine tune the farming and winemaking to accomplish that goal.

Vineyards: We source high quality fruit from select, expertly managed vineyards in Happy Canyon. We look for good soils, aspects, and vine age, if possible, but perhaps most important is the dedication to quality of the ownership and management teams. After 15 years of refining, we now have multiple blocks in four spectacular vineyards: Vogelzang (three blocks, 3.59 acres total), Grassini (3 blocks, 2.25 acres), Grimm’s Bluff (three blocks, 2.21 acres) and Two Wolves (just outside Happy Canyon, 1 block, .33 acres). These sites are each capable of producing top quality wine.

Farming: Our grapes are carefully farmed following organic (or biodynamic) principles on a per acre basis according to our specifications for pruning, shoot thinning, canopy management, yield control and irrigation. We focus on vine balance, proper yield, and exceptionally high quality. Pick dates are chosen by flavor and grape condition as much as sugar or acidity numbers. We have the grapes harvested by hand in the cool morning hours by excellent crews (most have been with the same vineyard for 10 or more years), and we personally sort the grapes with the teams. The fruit that arrives at the winery is in pristine condition.

Winemaking: The grapes are processed within hours, gently whole cluster pressed to tank, and cold settled overnight. Given these unique high-quality grapes (great concentration with perfect natural acidity and minerality) we believe in extended oak aging and lees contact to develop richness and character in the wines. Thus, we ferment the juice on native yeasts in a mixture of French oak barrels (roughly 80%) and stainless steel (roughly 20%) until complete dryness. We top up the barrels, block malolactic fermentation and then age each barrel on its lees for roughly 7 months before we make selections based upon wine character, and typicity to the vineyard terroir. The appellation blend wine is given roughly 8 months aging before bottling, whereas the single vineyard wines are aged, depending upon vintage, for a total of 15-19 months, in a larger percentage of oak, including small amounts of new oak.

The Wines

2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara

This wine is blended from all four of our vineyards. We choose barrels (or tanks) that have a more energetic, taut, and lively character, along with the depth and concentration that these fabulous vineyards can provide when farmed properly. The wine ages for a total of 8 months on the lees, before it is blended, cold stabilized with a light fining (plant and soil-based fining agents) and gently cross flow filtered before bottling. This wine has routinely been highly rated by critics and coveted by top restaurants. The wine pairs with a tremendous variety of foods with weight and interest lifted by great structure and acidity.

2021 was a very cool vintage that, unlike 2020, did not suffer from searing heat waves. The season was long and measured, with exceptional ripeness and lower sugars and fantastic acidities. We love this vintage. The wine is comprised of 60% Grassini, 27% Vogelzang, 8% Two Wolves, 5% Grimm’s Bluff. It was aged in 85% neutral oak barrels and 15% stainless steel. We think it is exceptionally bright and lively, but with real depth from the long season and the fantastic condition of the vines.

The 2021 wine has not yet been rated, but the 2020 was widely loved by critics (95 Wine Advocate, 92 points, Vinous).

This wine is limited, as it has been out of stock for a while and demand is high.  It will be a great wine for summer (and the summer after that if you can keep some). Enjoy!

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Grassini Family Vineyard ** Wine Club Wine, Fall 2022

2020 was a miracle vintage as we have discussed many times over the last year. Somehow, we missed all the wildfires that ravaged the state. A cool year was sped up by a massive heatwave in August, which caused some dehydration and required us pick the Sauvignon Blancs very quickly during the following cool down.. Grapes were picked in our three blocks from August 18-21. Yields were very low (well under 3 tons per acre), but acidities were still excellent due to the cool year.

The 2020 Grassini selection was comprised of wines that were aged in 100% French oak barrels (228L) and Cigars (300L), 10% of which were new.

The 2020 Grassini has not been reviewed but Jeb Dunnuck gave the 2019 Grassini 96 points and some great press, calling it “one of the finest examples of this variety in California”. The Wine Advocate gave it 95 points as well.

Extremely limited – Only 250 cases produced, most going to the wine club this Fall.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Vogelzang Vineyard **Wine Club Wine, Winter 2022

Vogelzang is a tremendous site. We have leased several acres here since 2009, and these wines have been some of our most decorated and long-lived wines – as much as the reds!  Vines are now 20 years old and in their prime.

In 2020 the vessels selected for this wine were 100% French oak barrels of varying sizes (228L barriques, 276L “cigars”, and 300L and 320 L “Muid’ocs”).  In total the new wood represented 22% of the blend.  The wine was aged for a total of 18 months on its lees before bottling.

The 2020 is a worthy successor to the 97-point (Jeb Dunnuck) 2019 Vogelzang, which Jeb said, “just blew me away” with “thrilling notes of crushed limes, lemons, sappy flowers, and minerality.” Jeb concluded his review, saying this wine is “as good as anything out there!” The Wine Advocate added 96 points as well.

Extremely Limited. Only 260 cases produced. Most going to the Wine Club in February 2023.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Grimm’s Bluff Vineyard

From its inception, Grimm’s Bluff has been painstakingly and biodynamically farmed for top quality grapes, yields be damned. The vineyard produces extremely small vines and tiny clusters, which give highly concentrated fruit. We selected three separate blocks (head trained clone 1, vertical shoot position (“VSP”)  clone 1 and VSP musque clone) for this wine, which is aged in French oak Cigars, a portion of which is new (light long toast). Here the wood frames the wine, stretching it and lengthening it so that the finish lasts minutes.

In 2020, we aged the wine for 16 months on its lees in 75% French oak of various shapes and sizes (27% new) and 25% stainless steel. The resulting wine was all Clone 1, 75% head trained section, 25% VSP. As is typical, this wine is tightly coiled, with powerful minerals from the clay and river rock soils, and deeply concentrated from low (2.39 tpa) yields. Melons and stone fruits are held aloft by citrus, minerals, excellent acidity and the structure from the new oak barrels. It should age for a long time.

Again, it is too soon for scores on this wine, but the 2019 was 95 points, Wine Advocate.

This wine is extremely limited, only 120 cases were produced.
